The Penny turns 100 - Four new designs!
2009 marks the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln Penny and the 200th birthday of Abraham Lincoln himself.
Congress and the President have signed into law a bill that will create not one, but FOUR new penny designs for 2009. While the picture of honest Abe will still distinguish the front of the penny, the back of the penny will have various designs from Abraham Lincoln's time in Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois and Washington D.C.
What better way is there to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the penny than by creating your very own portrait of Abraham Lincoln - out of pennies!

Copper Chemistry!
Click on the following links to see amazing chemistry experiments that can be done with pennies. Instructions for additional experiments, with safe household chemicals, are included with each Penny Portrait.
“The Alchemist’s Dream” - A chemistry experiment that changes the color of a penny from copper into silver, then gold!
“Penny Shell” - Only the very outside of a modern penny is made of copper. The inside is zinc. By scratching a penny so the zinc is exposed, you can use acid to dissolve the zinc leaving only the outer copper shell.
